Trinidad & Tobago
The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, located in the south-eastern West Indies is consisted of two main islands and numerous smaller islands. Trinidad the much larger island of the two main islands has an area of 1850 square miles. Tobago, the smaller main island has an area 115 square miles and lies 20 miles to the northeast of Trinidad. The official language of Trinidad & Tobago is English although most people speak Trinidad English, which is a type of creole language. The population of the Trinidad & Tobago is approximately 1.3 million people which makes it the 151st most populated country in the world. Trinidad first participated in the Olympic Games in 1948 and has participated in all the Summer Games since then except for the 1960 Games. The country has won a total of 19 medals consisting of 3 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 11 bronze medals. All medals were won in Athletics, Weightlifting and Swimming. Trinidad & Tobago first sent athletes to participate in the Olympic Games at the 1948 London Games. They first medaled at the 1964 Tokyo Games where they won silver in the 400 meters event and bronze in both the 200 meters and 4x400 meters relay both in the men category. Ato Boldon is a former track and field athlete and a four-time Olympic medalist. Boldon was the third fastest man in the world in the 100 meters in the summer of 1995. Boldon started out playing football in school when his coach noticed his speed on the field and drafts him to the track team. In 1992 he was apart of the Trinidad & Tobago Olympic team at age 18 making him the youngest athlete ever to do so. In 1993 at the World Junior Games, he became the first and only person to hold the World 100 and 200 meters Junior sprint titles at the same time. Ato currently holds the Trinidad & Tobago national record for the 200 meters event. He won his first Olympic medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games in the 100 meters event where he won a bronze medal. He also won a bronze medal in the 200 meters at those Games. The following Olympics at the 2000 Sydney Games he won a silver medal in the 100 meters sprint and bronze in the 200 meters sprint. After Boldon retired from athletics, he went into politics where he was an Opposition Senator. The then became a NCB Sports televsion broadcast analyst for track and field. Keshorn Walcott is a Trinidadian athelete who competes in the javelin throw. He won his first competition at the age of 16 and set a Junior World record before he was 20. He was dominant in the Junior games that he ended up winning gold medal in every CARIFTA games which he competed in. He then went on to win gold at the 2012 London Games in the javelin throw. This made him the youngest gold medalist in the men's javelin throw and the first athlete to win the World Junior and Olympic event in the same year. |
