The Bahamas
The Bahamas archipelago is an ecological oasis sprinkled over 100,000 square miles of ocean. It comprises of 700 islands and boast the clearest water on the planet. The Bahamas has a population of approximately 385 thousand people making it the 177th most populous country in the world. The official language of The Bahamas is English. The Bahamas first participated in the Summer Olympics in 1952. They have participated in all games after that except for the 1980 games. They have won a total of 14 medals consisting of 6 gold medals, silver medals and 6 bronze medals. All medals have come from both athletics and sailing. Brief History of Athletics in The Bahamas
The Bahamas became a member of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) in 1952 and participated in their first international competition in the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954. Thomas Robinson made Bahamian athletics history in 1964 at the Tokyo Olympics by becoming the first Bahamian to make an Olympic final. Pauline Davis-Thompson is a Bahamian and former sprinter who competed at five Olympic Games. She won a total of 3 Olympic medals consisting of 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal. She won her first medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games in the 4 x 100 meter event. The following Olympics at the 2000 Sydney Games she won 2 gold medals. She won gold in the 4 x 100 meter event and original won a silver in the 200 meters but was awarded the gold nine years later after Marion Jones disqualification. After her athletics career, Pauline went into athletics administration and was elected to the IAAF council in 2007. Featured Individual Currently ExcellingChristopher Brown
Christopher Brown nicknamed "The Fireman", is the most decorated Bahamian 400 meters runner in history. Chris Brown holds both the Bahamian national 400 meters record and the 800 meters. Brown was part of the 4x400 meters relay that won the bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. He was also part of the same team that won the gold medal at the 2001 Edmonton World Championships. He also won a silver medal with the same team in the 2008 Olympic Games. He was also part of the 4X400 meters relay team that upset USA wining the gold medal in the 2012 London Games. |
